The other day, I was discussing the future of our society with a brilliant young, and up and coming future philosopher, John Altmann. Specifically we got onto the topic of economic theory and the need for more economic and economic philosophy instruction in our education system. If you know anything about the damage socialism can cause, or how uneducated electorates can vote in such a way to bring down an entire nation, then you already understand without me having to point out nations such as Argentina, Greece, or Zimbabwe for instance. Okay so let's talk.

John had begun our dialogue with a superb essay on a future where American society leading by example, therefore the whole of human civilizations globally began a new era of world-wide prosperity. Still, to make this dream a reality, we are going to need to teach economics in our schools so that the students understand where we are headed and why. In fact, I had come up with a nifty little quote of my own:

"Up and Coming Philosophers must be challenged and hone their skills to better see, until they can challenge themselves to the same or greater degree" - Lance 2012.

Then, I lamented to John that maybe we can get some original thoughts which go beyond all these famous names we are forced to memorize in school - something new, something bold, something which can be challenged, but never denied. What might that be - and how do we get from where we are today, to where we need to go, you see?

Indeed, we need to think "beyond the bun" as Taco Bell says, it's time to ditch the special sauce and leave the old behind, come up with a totally new way of thinking, really advance the dialogue and human discourse, because what we have now in the world, it isn't good enough.

Much of the past philosophy is stale, uneventful, common thinking, thoughts people have while jogging on a ridge line overlooking a scenic valley, but we are forced to rote memorize names of dead people, who had common thoughts, and yet were assigned those thoughts as if they owned them, why? I ask. We can do better than this, YOU, can do better than those past philosophers, I told John.

You know, we really must get out there, and challenge things - and yet, harness the beauty of simplicity of your new original thought which you will soon be thinking of. It's time to take this to the next level. So, let's continue, and I am open to considering this request, we need to push the limits and boundaries, boldly. Victory goes to the bold. I hereby challenge the future students and say;

Let's break the sound barrier, then light, a fire under the human civilizations - someone has to wake them up! Please consider all this and think on it.

I've given suggestions on how to curb average college graduate debt but in all reality some students and parents alike may be wondering what kind of loans there even are for college educations.

1. Stafford Loans

Federal Stafford Loans are loans offered by the Department Education to help subsidize your personal and families resources. They also cover above and beyond scholarships, work study, and grants. Almost all students can get Stafford Loans no matter what your credit score is or other financial problems you may have had in the past. There are both Unsubsidized and Subsidized loans, both of which, are guaranteed by the Federal Government.

2. Parent PLUS Loan

A Federal Parent PLUS Loan is a loan that parents of dependent students can apply for to help pay for the remainder of school that the financial aid package did not cover. It can cover up to the full cost of the student's tuition. Parents must pass a credit check to be approved for this loan, the only way around it is to get a friend or a relative to guarantee the loan. I would not suggest this for anyone.If someone asks you to do this, who is not your own personal child, you are setting yourself up for disaster. As of right now the interest rate for this loan is a 7.9% fixed rate. This loan is a 10-year loan and it is required that you must pay at least $50 a month and repayment begins 60 days after the full amount of the loan is dispersed.

3. Federal Perkins Loan

A Perkins Loan is a federal loan given to undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional financial needs. It has a low interest rate at 5% and unlike other loans, it has to be applied through the student's financial aid office at their school. Depending on what amount you need for school, the amount per year that an undergraduate student can obtain is $4,000, with the maximum amount allowed total per student is $27,500. For a graduate student, the maximum amount per year is $8,000 and $60,000 total which would include the undergraduate amount requested previously.

4. Graduate PLUS Loan

The Graduate PLUS Loan is almost exactly like the Parent Plus Loan except for the fact that it is for a Graduate Student to apply for. The Graduate PLUS loan is a fixed rate interest rate at 7.9%. Graduate students must apply for this based on credit scores and not on a need basis. The loan allows graduate students to apply for the loan for tuition, room and board, books, lab expenses, minus any other aid that the student is currently receiving. Payments can be deferred while you are currently enrolled in a program and the interest that is accrued is tax deductible for most graduate students.

The Mysterious Circuit Q

So, you found an old piece of RF test equipment at a rummage sale. A friend who is a Ham radio enthusiast tells you it is a 'Q meter', and it appears to be in working order - great!

But, what is a Q meter?

A Q meter was used to measure the resonant rise of voltage across either of the reactive elements in a tuned circuit. This measurement resulted from injecting a small known radio frequency voltage across a very small series resistor which connected to the resonant circuit. The magnified or resonant voltage rise was then measured by a vacuum tube voltmeter (translation: high input impedance voltmeter). Since the amount of injected voltage was accurately known, the resonant voltage rise or circuit magnification factor could be directly calibrated in terms of the Q of the coil being measured. Although still popular with radio hobbyists, they have been largely replaced by network analyzers.

Why do I want to measure Q?

Q is a very common measure of performance for resonant circuits. It expresses a ratio of the total energy stored versus the energy dissipated in a circuit during one cycle of operation.

Using Q we can determine:

1. The damping effect when current is decaying in a resonant circuit.

2. Phase angle and power factor of tuned circuits.

3. Antenna characteristics.

4. Transmission-line parameters.

5. Selectivity of a tuned circuit.

6. The RF impedance of a coil.

7. The RF loss angle of a capacitor.

Q and Series Resonant Circuits

In series resonant circuits, Q is calculated using the effective series resistance (Rs), a theoretical value representing all losses including those of the resonant coil and capacitor. Using Rs, Q is expressed as:

Q = ωL/Rs =1/(C x Rs); where ω = 2π x f.

Rearranging we find: Rs = ωL/Q = 1/Q x ωC - usually a very small quantity.

Q and Parallel Resonant Circuits

In a parallel resonant circuit, Q is calculated using the effective parallel resistance (Rp) a reflected value often represented by a parallel resistor connected across the tuned circuit. Using Rp, Q is expressed as:

Q = Rp/ωL = ωC x Rp

Again, by rearranging, we see Rp = Q x ωL = Q/ωC - usually a very large quantity.

Here we see that the impedance of a parallel resonant circuit is Q times the impedance of the reactive elements. In the series case, the current flowing at resonance is Q times the normal current flow.

Q and Damped Oscillation

In a damped oscillating circuit, Q expresses the logarithmic decrement ς of the circuit.

Therefore:

ς = π/Q = Rs/2f = 2 x (π^2) x f x C x Rs

As we know, R/2L is the damping coefficient -. since the equation for current decay is:

I2 / I1 = e ^(-RT/2L).

ς, which multiplies the damping coefficient by f, accounts for frequency.

Q and Phase Angle.

The vector relationship between the current and driving voltage in a resonant circuit is the familiar equation:

Q and Power Factor.

The relationship between Q and the power factor (cosθ) of an inductor or the ratio of the total effective resistance to the total circuit impedance can be shown to be:

Q = 1/cosθ; where θ is the phase angle.
